Urban disorder: constructions in swamp areas, stream beds must be combated ...

A site in the middle of a swamp

Despite repeated breakages by municipal authorities, swamps, rain drains, river beds, etc., are stormed by the populations who build houses there in defiance of the law of April 2004 governing the town planning code in Cameroon. This text in force provides in its article 9 that land exposed to natural risks such as floods, landslides, earthquakes, cannot be built unless otherwise specified. Such incivism exposes cities and their populations to bad weather and the risk of disasters, particularly floods for which anarchic constructions are more than 50% responsible. This type of urban disorder in our cities deserves to be vigorously combated in order to anticipate the risks of disasters in urban areas. The mayors of cities and district municipalities must work in synergy to make a comprehensive census of critical areas that call for demolition.
