Electricity sector in Cameroon: the important role of actors in economic recovery after the coronavirus pandemic
The government has given new impetus to the electricity sector with a view to economic recovery after the serious health crisis caused by the Covid-19 epidemic, by specifying the missions of the various actors and by emphasizing the role of SONATREL ( National Electricity Transport Company). SONATREL, a publicly owned company, transports electrical energy and manages the transport network on behalf of the State. The organic texts indicate that the company "takes care of the operation, maintenance and development of the public electric power transmission network and its other networks; the management of electrical energy flows by the public transport network; the planning, carrying out of studies and my project management of infrastructure and electricity transmission works, as well as the research and management of related financing ... ". ENEO (Energy of Cameroon), the public electricity utility concessionaire, is responsible for production and marketing. EDC (Electricity Development Corporation), the property company and state engineer manages the dams and will get the water rights from ENEO and others. The AER (Rural Electrification Agency) is developing rural electrification to support decentralization and local development. ARSEL (Electricity Sector Regulatory Agency) continues to play the role of regulator with funding consisting mainly of ENEO share prices, in accordance with the law of 14 December 2011 governing the sector. The work of Hercule therefore awaits the players in the sector so that the rate of electric power supply drops from 50% to 75% in large metropolitan areas with an 85% reduction in interruptions in the supply of electricity. We could thus move from the status of detestable load shedding to the status of a major supplier of electrical energy necessary for the revival of economic activity.
